Welcome to the Santa Fe Film Department

Santa Fe is proud to be named the #1 Best Place to Live and Work as a Filmmaker in North America—three years running (MovieMaker Magazine). With our rich cultural history, breathtaking landscapes, and thriving creative community, film is an essential part of Santa Fe’s economy and identity.

The Santa Fe Film Office works to support productions, connect local businesses with opportunities, and ensure the City remains a film-friendly destination.

About The Film Office

The Santa Fe Film Office was established in 2016 through a partnership between the City and County of Santa Fe. Our mission is to attract and facilitate film, television, and digital media production while strengthening the local industry through outreach, training, and education.

Film Commissioner: Jennifer LaBar-Tapia
Staff: Andrew C. Griego and a dedicated team supporting permitting, production needs, and industry engagement.
We serve as a resource for productions filming in Santa Fe and work closely with City departments to ensure a smooth, safe, and successful process.

Incentives & Training

Santa Fe benefits from New Mexico’s nationally recognized film incentives, including:
25% Refundable Tax Credit for film, television, commercials, animation, video games, and post-production.
No minimum budget and no sunset clause—making Santa Fe accessible for projects of all sizes.
Film Crew Advancement Program (FCAP): Up to 50% wage reimbursement for training New Mexico crew members.

These incentives, paired with Santa Fe’s infrastructure and talent, continue to attract productions from around the globe.

Permits & Production Support

The Film Office assists with:

  • Film Permits: Coordinating with City departments (Police, Fire, Parks, etc.) for a streamlined approval process.
  • Production Resources: Guidance on stages, locations, drone use, safety regulations, and set conduct.
  • Business Connections: Linking productions with local vendors, hotels, and service providers.

Staff should direct inquiries about permitting and production needs to the Film Office for centralized coordination.

Community Engagement

The Film Office also works to strengthen Santa Fe’s creative ecosystem through:
Mayor’s Film & Digital Media Council: A leadership group of filmmakers, educators, and industry experts advising on policy and promoting film as an economic driver.
Educational Outreach: Supporting programs that connect students and residents with opportunities in film and digital media.
Getting Started Guides: Resources for locals interested in background acting, production assistant work, and other entry-level opportunities.

Santa Fe proudly hosts the Santa Fe International Film Festival (SFiFF), one of the premier film events in the Southwest.
2025 Festival Dates: October 15–20
Features screenings, panels, and celebrations of film excellence.
